What I Read in August (2025)

It is so insane to see that it is already going to be September! I know it shouldn’t be surprising, but yet, every year, you blink and months have gone by. I feel like Bella in that one scene where time is going by while she sits in her chair.

That me.

ANYWAY, to the good stuff!! August was a good month for me in terms of reading and running (will not discuss running in detail today, but yay!). I read a total of 6 books this month, and I usually will only get 4 completed on a good month. I also found my first 5 star reads of the year, which I am very excited about. As a reader, I find myself to be very picky, so I don’t hand out stars easily. I do usually enjoy the lower tiered books, I just acknowledge that they are not all 5s. Here’s what I read:

The Age of Magical Overthinking: Notes on Modern Irrationality by Amanda Montell

I. for some reason, expected this to be exclusively about anxiety. I will admit, that I almost never read the synopsis’s of books. It is more fun that way to be pleasantly surprised. With that being said, this book made some interesting points.

I listened to the book on Libby and I finished it pretty quickly. The book is very forgettable, I would not ever re-read it, but I appreciated it for what it is.

Just for the Summer by Abby Jimenez

Abby Jimenez was an author who I tried out last year. The first book I read was Yours Truly and it was not my cup of tea. I did not enjoy it at all, so I wanted to try again to see if it was just a one off.

The premise of the book was super cute. As a cornball, the beginning was very adorable in my opinion, the idea of a romance that starts online is very realistic without being overused. I thought the plot would be how the characters go through challenges to get to each other in person. You would think that, right? BUT…

The book quickly pivots to something else that is just boring. There is no other way to put it. It tries to be serious and talk about family dynamics, that could work, if it hadn’t tried to lure you in as a romance/comedy book. I understand that some books mix the cute with the serious, but the style of this book was not made for that. Overall, it made the book messy in my opinion.

BTW, the real star of this book is the BFF, Maddy, who took everyone’s shit with grace while only being honest and sacrificing her time for a friend that’d rather prioritize a dead beat mom.

There is a good thing from this reading experience and it is figuring out that this author is not for me.

Sorry I’m Late, I Didn’t Want to Come: An Introvert’s Year of Living Dangerously by Jessica Pan

This book was solid for me. I am an introvert and, of course, this caught my attention.

The book describes a year of an introvert trying things outside of her comfort zone. It is in an effort to stop missing out on life and that is relatable. The author’s experience is overall positive, with some hiccups here and there.

This book was a little boring, a little funny, and yes, a little cringy. To me, that was fair and I almost expected it since it was stuff that I myself would hate to do or try. Towards the end, I appreciated her experience although I don’t think I would ever try the things she did. LOL!

A Court of Frost and Starlight by Sarah J. Maas

This series was wonderful in the beginning. Books 1-3 were great and although I didn’t follow everything exactly, the overall story was fun. My approach to this series was to listen to the books, especially since I am not the biggest fantasy fan.

This book falls flat for me in comparison with everything else I’ve read beforehand. I don’t think we needed to make this one, seems like a cash grab. That is all I really have to say about it. I will be reading the next book over the next few weeks, so we’ll see if it ends well at least.

Lessons in Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus

My first five of the year! This book… I don’t know why it took so long to read this.

Elizabeth Zott’s character is a tough woman. I LOVE a hard headed woman. I am a hard headed woman!

From start to end, I enjoyed this story. This book did a well written love story in a few chapters, whereas so many authors need the entire novel to portray a love of that kind. Calvin and Elizabeth were not perfect, but they were sticking with each other til the end.

She is a wonderful embodiment of perserverance. One of my favorite parts *spoiler* is her interaction with the mother in the audience, pushing her to go to medical school.

I try not to provide spoilers in my reviews, but this is a wonderful book for girls/women of all ages. I saw that some people did not enjoy this book due to it being misleading, but again, since I typically don’t read up on a book before I start it, I did not have this problem.

Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir

Rating: 5 out of 5.

This book! WOW! Let me preface by saying that I do not gravitate towards fantasy or sci-fi for the most part.

I decided to listen to this on Audible instead of reading it since I needed a book during the week.

I devoured this book. I read like 4 chapters and then immediately started telling people to read it. This is my first book for Weir, and now I am not sure if I will ruin it for myself if I grab something else from him. Don’t want to be disappointed.

The book was wildly interesting. I don’t think there was one point during this book where I was bored. There were laughs, gasps, tears (!!), and a lot of discussion because of this story.

There are not that many characters in this book and because of that, you get really invested in how things will turn out. I am tearing up right now thinking of some events from the book. It is a space book, it is a end-of-the-world kind of book, and yet it has a lot of heart and punch. This is going to be my new go-to when recommending books.

That makes six! I ended the month with some solid reads and that was fantastic for me. Let me know if you read anything interesting or if you have any suggestions for September. 🙂

  1. […] I do like to read outside of my preferred genres because sometimes there are nice surprises. My first five star read of this year was a sci-fi book, so it is nice to eat my own words every once… […]
